The Rising Of The Shield Hero: Shield Design

The Rising of the shield hero is the anime I have been binging recently. I’m making short work of the show so to speak. Once I see something I want to design I immediately drop everything and open up the blender. I wanted this to be a quick model. I am trying to get quicker at blocking the necessary parts of models going forward. The shield was in a decent state after 2-3 hours, which I was delighted with. Let’s see how I got on shall we.

The Design

The design of the shield is fairly straightforward, I was able to create a rectangular face and extrude and scale the edges out to create the sides. Blender makes this really easy to do once you know how to use the shortcuts. I then used a Boolean operator to remove a cone shape from the centre of the shield which allowed a chamfered circular edge to appear. I then duplicated and removed everything except for the black indent, extended it and used another boolean to remove a similar section from the shield. A small bit of tidying and here I am with the design.

The Shield!

The Legendary Shield (or shied spirit) is considered a Legendary Weapon in the anime. The Legendary Shield is one of four Legendary Weapons present in the world. The candidate of the weapon has been given the title of Shield Hero. The shield can transform into other shields as chosen by the owner (as long as the owner has ‘Unlocked’ that shield). As the shield transforms in the anime, we see a whole host of different designs and uses for it. But the shield I have to design is the main (stock) shield when at rest or in light battle.

The plan going forward.

The Legendary Shield that I have designed will not be able to transform like its anime counterpart (how unfortunate). But it will be ideal for any Naofumi cosplaying (I hope).

I will have access to my printer next week once I return home, so I will be engineering the crap out of the shield for you guys. The shield needs to be split and printed in 3 separate parts, so I will add in an inner support structure for plugs or maybe some dowels (not too sure yet how this will end up).

I also need to work on the handle or the arm support where the intended user can secure the shield firmly to the forearm. I am also tinkering with the idea that I should make the shield with a removable green gem or have it so that some led lights can shine through the back. The LEDs could be ”turned on” by the user when they would like.

I may have to transfer this model over to Fusion360. I think there will be too many interlocking parts to make the shield printable. But that’s ok. having gotten the shield ”Finished” in Blender I don’t really mind restarting it in fusion360. Let’s see.

The CR10S will need to be rebuilt for this print, it hasn’t run in months due to some temperature control issues. I have some parts I need to swap out but I need to get home first to install them. I am slow-thinking I will turn this into an ender their print, it might end up being 6-8 parts depending on how I orientate and cut the pieces up, I don’t even know if that will work yet.

Other Shields

Some other noteworthy shield that I plan to design this year is Naofumi’s Chimera shield. The shield will be a challenge, the snakes will need scales along their body, which I don’t know who to do yet. But it means it’s a great learning opportunity to do some sculpting maybe. Plus look how cool that shield is. I have seen some other fan art of this shield and OMG it’s amazing. I might create 2 designs, one base Naofumi shield and a more decorative version for those who are extra.

Naofumi’s rage shield could also be a great choice to model this year. But I think the chimaera shield offers more of a challenge to design, so I will start with that one. It’s a cool shield but it won’t necessarily improve my modelling capabilities right this moment. I need to focus on sculpting and adding small details to my designs.

Conclusion

The Rising of the shield hero is a quality anime that you should watch. It certainly got a different ‘flavour’ compared to other animes I’ve watched in recent times. I’m happy with how quick I was able to turn the model and get the design to where it is now. I just have to do some engineering work to make it printable and then away we go.

I am planning on having a lot more ‘anime-style 3d models coming this year. this will be the start of 2022, once I have it printed and tested. 2022 has so far been good, I have been able to produce a lot more models than I thought I was going to be able to do. Boba Fett and Mando are being progressed nicely as well, so everything is looking up.

Thanks again for dropping by and reading my thoughts. I hope you can stay along on my journey for the year.

What anime prop should I print next?
